Characters

Everyone Dr. Brink has met so far, and a handful of people not yet encountered on the page.

In Chapters One Through Five

Dr. Brink
A castaway ship's doctor, scientist, and alchemist, and the dossier's own narrator.
Scur
The Sauropsian village chieftain and fellow alchemist who becomes Brink's first colleague and friend in this land.
Tetch
One of Scur's two spear-carrying escorts, quick to interpret Brink's clumsy pantomime.
Koss
The other escort, steady at the front of the party, badly injured and healed over the course of the refinery expedition.

Beyond Chapter Five

The dossier continues past Chapter Five, though only Chapters One through Five have reached a finished, published state (see Story). The following people appear later in the manuscript, in material that exists only in draft form so far. Their bios are presented here on that basis, ahead of the prose itself.

Elsie
A grieving widow Brink meets on the road south, at the center of two uncomfortable schemes of their own making.
Paul
A large, good-natured mercenary who becomes one of Brink's traveling companions.
Darwin
A lean, wary mercenary, the more cynical half of Brink's new traveling company.
Ben
Elsie's husband, a carpenter gone missing while searching for medicine for their dying son.
David Goldstone
An orchardist killed in a roadside ambush, whose recovered letter and ledger open up a wider plot.
Sister Tiffany
A cleric at the Shrine of Felicity, in the town of Vanesville.
Benedict Crane
The Townmaster of Vanesville.
Frank Garibaldi
Innkeeper of the Garibaldi Inn in Vanesville.
Cass Hansen
Proprietor of the Fairweather Depot, Vanesville's general store.
