Ben is Elsie’s husband and a carpenter by trade, absent from the story’s opening when Brink first meets Elsie at their son Aubrey’s graveside: Ben had gone out searching for fever herbs to treat Aubrey and never returned. He is later found to have been captured by a starving band of Sauropsians, and is tracked down and ransomed free by Brink in exchange for iron ore and rations, before being reunited with Elsie.
