Technology
Central Computer
The brain of the ship, coordinating internal and external functions. It is relatively advanced despite its retro appearance, and part of its architecture houses Galena’s consciousness. Other ships and stations have central computers of varying design.
Comms Suite
An array of communications equipment able to transmit in several standards. Practically every ship and station has one, enabling near-instant communication across the galaxy.
Chiral Furnace (Sphalerizer)
The Verity’s chiral furnace is a sphalerizer: a high-energy electroweak reactor that induces sphaleron transitions under extreme conditions. In practice, it produces antimatter, channeled and reacted to produce usable energy in the forms of electricity and high-temperature plasma, powering ship functions including propulsion, control, and defense. It also produces neutrinos and antineutrinos for cooling channels. This is the standard power-generation method that enables warp-ring operation in this era.
The Verity’s sphalerizer is slightly overpowered for a ship of its size. Victoria’s ability to skillfully maintain it is a major competence marker; when integrated with the ship, Galena’s internal machine-sense helps interpret system behavior, and God’s abilities can assist in useful physical ways, but he cannot singlehandedly create, sustain, or maintain the reaction. The furnace should feel like real engineering: powerful, dangerous, delicate, and material.
Warp Ring
Manipulates spacetime enough to allow superluminal travel at several thousand times the speed of light. Requires substantial power and mechanically stresses the ship with extended use, and is dangerous near stars, planets, or other gravity wells. The Verity’s warp ring enables around 15,000c, high for a ship of its size; comparable ships often reach around 10,000c, and the most powerful warp rings reach around 25,000c.
Horizon Drive
A high-powered working EM Drive / Quantized Inertia-style reactionless sublight drive. It exploits relativistic particle horizons and Unruh radiation to achieve reactionless thrust, requires relatively low power compared with warp operation, and can accelerate the ship to about 0.5c before becoming unstable. It is used within star systems when ships are too close to gravity wells for safe warp-ring use. All ships are built with a horizon drive.
Fusion Thrusters
Small engines that fuse hydrogen isotopes into helium plasma, expelled to produce thrust. Used for small burns, orbital maneuvers, docking, and attitude control. Common on ships and stations.
Lightsails
Weak backup propulsion using stellar radiation pressure inside star systems. If all other propulsion fails, lightsails can usually get a ship to a planet or station within days or weeks.
Inertial Control
Technology producing gravitational force toward the floor. These mechanisms also serve as impact and acceleration shock absorbers. Found on most ships and many stations, though power-intensive; larger stations like Lucy’s Loop often use rotation instead.
Shielding
Powerful electromagnetic shielding, or “force fields,” protect the hull from physical debris and most directed energy weapons.
Energy Beams
Weapons that direct energetic particle beams at a target. Shields typically redirect the energy, causing ship malfunction rather than simple destruction, allowing attackers to escape, disable, or board rather than automatically vaporizing targets.
FnKey (Function Keychain)
A small object resembling a keyboard key, nicknamed the FnKey and pronounced “funky.” Victoria has had it since high school, after receiving it as a parting gift from Julian. It appears to be a simple charm, but sometimes reacts unexpectedly to strange energy sources.
The FnKey is not prophecy. It is a failed contingency plan that survived through ordinary affection, accident, and time.
