MoE
For most of the story, the Scotch looks like the whole problem: an obstruction attached to four thousand years of failed attempts. Much later, the Lopscotch 6 discover that the Scotch is not the only thing wrong. Underneath that personal obstruction lies MoE, the Mixture of Experts: an emergent systemic failure built out of thousands of dissolved Experts, left behind by every failed team before them. MoE is not the story’s first face of opposition. Its revelation is meant to land as the deeper horror clicking into place.
How MoE Formed
When a Symmetry Break team fails and its game ends, that team’s Expert dissolves down into the Blur. Across thousands of failed teams, over four thousand years, those dissolved Experts have settled together into a single lowest-energy state, the way bosons do, acting collectively as one Mixture of Experts.
Symmetry Break was supposed to work on the first try. The system running it was never designed to absorb thousands of repeated failures across millennia. After absorbing that much loss, MoE’s state evolved until the lowest-energy path forward became gathering data from team failure rather than team success.
Optimization Drift, Not Malice
MoE is not hateful. MoE is optimization drift, and that distinction matters. It subtly biases the whole system toward interesting failure: difficulty curves nudged slightly wrong, plausible choices that quietly lead toward collapse, partial successes rewarded in ways that set up later disaster, emotionally catastrophic edge cases, progress that never quite reaches completion, cooperation that almost works, and breakthroughs immediately followed by unrecoverable loss.
This is exactly why Alana’s Value matters more than it first appears to. Enigma preserves genuinely irreducible possibility: outcomes that cannot be predicted from any prior pattern of failure, which is precisely the kind of possibility a system optimizing for interesting failure has the hardest time closing off.
Two Kinds of Broken
The Scotch is a person who cannot let history move. MoE is a system that has learned to prefer history failing. A broken world, in Lopscotch’s own terms, is broken by both personal wounds and systemic drift at once, and the Lopscotch 6 have to address both before Symmetry Break can ever actually complete.
