Volume Two

Volume Two has not been written. What follows is the working outline for where the story goes after Volume One, sketched out in brief and summarized here in that spirit: a shape, not a script.

North on the Lookescope Trail

Brink, Paul, and Darwin set out north to finally reach Claudia, retracing the Lookescope Trail. Elsie and Ben join them, in part so Ben can visit the grave of a companion who died on that same trail before he ever met Brink’s party. The group pays its respects together and continues on as five instead of three.

Return to the Cove

The trail passes by Scur’s village, and the reunion is not entirely smooth: Darwin’s old prejudices and Ben’s own trauma both surface before the visit is through. With Scur joining directly this time, since it concerns Sauropsians specifically, the party finally investigates the Foreman Fox subplot left open since Chapter Four. Along the way, Brink finds and adopts a dog, naming it Collarbones.

Fox

Brink deals with Fox using the exact method used on Elsie in Volume One: poison, followed by a staged “miracle” recovery meant to win Fox’s trust and access. This time, though, the outcome is different. Rather than curing Fox, Brink quietly lets Scur deliver the final blow. The rest of the party notices, without saying so aloud, how closely Fox’s symptoms mirrored Elsie’s.

Claudia, and What Comes After

The party finally reaches Claudia and delivers the pen recovered from the tomb in Part Two, learning of the doomed romance it once belonged to. Claudia’s account also finally makes sense of the old key recovered back in Chapter Six, pointing the party toward a new thread they go on to investigate. Later, trying to do right by Elsie and Ben, Brink attempts to bring their son back using an old theoretical technique first mentioned back in Chapter Seven and the sapphire recovered alongside that same key. The first attempt goes wrong: what returns is not their son, only a hollow imitation of him, and Brink undoes that mistake privately before trying again, this time successfully, restoring the boy for real.

Also sketched for this volume: considerably more interiority and agency for both Elsie and Ben, a developing relationship between Paul and Darwin, and one between Brink and Scur. None of this is written yet.
