Scur
“B'rink.”
- Role
- Chieftain of a small coastal Sauropsian village; alchemist
Scur leads the small fishing village Brink stumbles into after washing ashore: a community of perhaps a dozen or so Sauropsians, organized with obvious care despite its size. Scur’s authority reads as earned rather than imposed, patient, deliberate, and unhurried even under the threat of an armed stranger walking out of the sea.
Scur is also, it turns out, an alchemist in their own right, keeping a shelf of pots and a stained mortar in their hut alongside a hand-drawn map of the cove and its dangers. They and Brink strike up an immediate working rapport once that becomes clear, purifying Brink’s first sample of luminescent fungal spores together within hours of meeting.
Scur is the one who names Brink, reshaping the sounds of “Brink” through a throat not built for them into “B’rink,” and it is Scur who asks Brink, wordlessly, for help with the village’s poisoned river, a request sealed with a wrist-clasp older than either of their languages.
Voice
Nonverbal for most of Chapters One through Five, communicated through gesture, clicks, and a carefully drawn map, with the exception of the single reshaped word “B’rink.” Scur’s emotional register comes through clearly regardless: approving rattles, delighted clicking laughter, a grave growl at bad news, a hiss of alarm at an unfamiliar and unwelcome object.
