Elsie is a grieving woman Brink finds weeping at a small, fresh grave not long after leaving Scur’s village and setting out south with two mercenary companions. The grave belongs to her young son, Aubrey, dead of a fever her husband Ben had been out searching for medicine to treat when it happened.

Elsie becomes the center of two staged crises that Brink engineers alone, identically across both surviving drafts of the material beyond Chapter Five. First, in the woods by her son’s grave, Brink shoots her with a crossbow bolt and immediately stages an urgent “changeling” exorcism to explain and undo the injury. Later, once she and Ben are reunited in Vanesville, Brink secretly poisons her, then performs a dramatic “miracle” recovery, building a reputation as a healer in the process. Brink reflects on both decisions with real discomfort even at the time. Elsie survives, and is eventually reunited with Ben.
