Ship’s doctor, scientist, and alchemist; narrator of the dossier

Brink is a castaway: a ship’s surgeon washed ashore alone after a storm destroyed the Intrepid Lens and every soul aboard it but them. What the chapters establish is a scientist and physician by training and temperament, methodical to a fault, and instinctively more comfortable gathering data than sitting with uncertainty.

Brink is fluent in Opentongue, a widely spoken trade language, and in their native Gnomic, and speaks at least a little Fabrican, a language that carries unusual weight when used for “the practice,” a difficult, lifetime-honed discipline of focused intention that alchemy exists as a more accessible substitute for. Brink has only modest skill in it, but finds it works far more readily in this new land than it ever did back home.

Brink carries a surgeon’s kit, a small crossbow they are trained in but had never had cause to use, and a handcrafted thumb piano, alongside a mattress salvaged from the wreck that becomes, almost immediately, a running joke of a possession, first dragged and later harnessed like a sledge.

Voice

First-person, clinical, self-aware, prone to cataloguing sensory detail with the same care whether the subject is a poisoned river or their own racing pulse. Brink narrates their own missteps and fears as readily as their successes, and leans on gallows humor, and the occasional undignified outburst, when the clinical register runs out.

Beyond Chapter Five

Draft material beyond the chapters published here follows Brink south, away from Scur’s village, into the company of two mercenaries and a wider cast of townsfolk. That material shows a notably more ethically fraught side of Brink than anything in Chapters One through Five: manufactured crises, half-honest schemes, and a healer’s calling bent toward reputation as much as care. It has not reached a finished, publishable state, so it is not presented here in detail; see the other Beyond Chapter Five entries for what can be said about the people it introduces.
